How do I add a Peek Notes widget to my Home Screen?

Make a folder and a few notes in Peek Notes first. Then touch and hold an empty part of your Home Screen, tap Edit, then Add Widget, search for Peek Notes, swipe to pick a size and tap Add Widget.

How do I choose which folder a widget shows?

Touch and hold the widget, tap Edit Widget and pick a folder. Until you pick one, a new widget shows your first folder.

Can I have a widget for each folder?

Yes. Each widget shows one folder, so add a widget for every folder you want on your Home Screen.

Which widget sizes are there?

Small shows one column of notes, medium and large show two, and on iPad, extra large shows three.

What are the arrows on the widget for?

When a folder has more notes than fit, the arrows page through them, right on the Home Screen, without opening the app.

What happens when I tap a widget?

Peek Notes opens the folder that widget shows.

Widgets not looking right?

Why are my notes hidden in StandBy?

Note text is marked privacy-sensitive, so iOS hides it where your iPhone is locked, such as in StandBy.

My widget shows the wrong folder. How do I change it?

Touch and hold the widget, tap Edit Widget and pick the folder you want. A new widget shows your first folder until you pick one.

Why is a note cut short on the widget?

A widget shows as much of each note as fits. Tap the widget to open the folder and see the whole note.

Sync and your data

Will my notes sync to my other devices?

Yes. If you're signed in to iCloud, your folders and notes sync through your own private iCloud database, so they follow you to a new iPhone and to your iPad.

Does Peek Notes work without iCloud?

Yes. Without iCloud, Peek Notes keeps your folders and notes on your device.

Where are my notes stored?

On your device and, if you're signed in to iCloud, in your private iCloud database. That database belongs to your Apple Account, and I can't read it.

How do I delete all my data?

Delete folders or notes in the app, or delete the app. To remove the synced copy as well, delete the app's data from iCloud in Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Storage.

Apple Watch

How do my notes get to my Apple Watch?

Your iPhone sends a copy of your folders and notes to your paired Apple Watch, over Apple's own connection between the two. The watch keeps that copy, so it shows your notes even when your iPhone isn't nearby.

How do I put a note on my watch face?

Touch and hold the watch face, tap Edit and swipe to Complications. Tap a slot, choose Peek Notes and pick the note to show. There are circular, corner, inline and rectangular complications.

Can I see a folder on my watch face?

Yes. A rectangular widget shows a folder's first notes.

Why are my notes hidden on my watch face?

Watch complications and widgets are marked privacy-sensitive, so watchOS can hide them, for example while your watch is locked.

iPad

What's different on iPad?

Your folders and notes sit side by side, and the extra large widget shows a folder in three columns.

Are there keyboard shortcuts?

Yes: ⌘N makes a new note, ⇧⌘N a new folder, ⌘Return saves and Esc cancels.

Price and privacy

Is Peek Notes free?

Yes. Peek Notes is free, with no in-app purchases and no account to make.

Does Peek Notes collect my notes?

No. Peek Notes collects nothing: there's no account, no analytics and no third-party SDKs or ads. Your notes stay on your devices and in your own private iCloud, which I can't see.

Why does Peek Notes show a banner?

It shows one small banner for my other apps. It comes from my own website, not an ad network: the request carries no account, device or advertising identifier, and the app doesn't record whether you see or tap it.
